HOO. Landscape and food works is an artist unit by TAKAOKA Tomomi and NAGAMORI Shikino. Working with the philosophy, “A distant landscape and
a spoonful of soup ‒the world and the palm of one’s hand is connected,” they approach food from the perspective of landscape, culture, and society, to create food installations and performances in various locations across Japan that people can only experience then and there.
Throughout their practice, HOO. have produced works that draw inspiration from various traces that remain within regions or communities, such as the history and traditions that are associated with a particular place. Their new work “What is there as the days pass by,” is based on excerpts derived from an culmination of writings by 27 individuals who live or commute to Saitama City, each having been asked to write daily entries regarding their thoughts on love in originally designed diaries made by the unit.
In his book The Art of Loving, Erich Fromm writes, “Love is an active power in man; a power which breaks through the walls which separate man from his fellow men, which unites him with others.” (*1) The writings of the individuals, each born through contemplating about love within the pages of their diary, harbor various memories and a certain earnestness that only comes to emerge under such circumstances. Through engaging with these writings, we as viewers are led to imagine the lives of each and every person that extends beyond their words.
