KAKEYA Nayu "Love letter of the Reiwa era", Saitama Triennale 2020 / Photo: ASAMI Shunya
The unprecedented pandemic has made it impossible to meet and gather in person, so the question arises of how can we create a movement that circulates culture. During Japan's Heian period, it was part of the culture to fall in love with a person whom one had never met and express one’s feelings through writing traditional poems called waka on the blossoming branch. These poems and poems written in reply were gathered together in the collection known as Wakashu.
Presently, I continue to create works as if I were writing waka poems, while thinking about the people I have met. At other times, like a postman, I cut out and carry my entire exhibition with me, attempting to physically and multi-directionally repeat the circulation and connection of the story weaved by the work. Regardless of the medium through which we meet, whether it is in person just a few steps away, or over a monitor, or in the future, I believe you are always here.
