MIYAKE Mai "Butterfly's Dream", Saitama Triennale 2020 / Photo: JUN YAMAMOTO
MIYAKE Mai is an artist who questions the essence of things, timelessly connecting Japan’s unique aesthetic awareness and sensibility while utilizing cutting-edge technology and craftwork. For this art festival, MIYAKE has developed an installation that penetrates spaces of differing character, such as the ward mayor's office, special conference room, and health counseling room/infirmary of the former Omiya Ward Office. The title “Butterfly’s Dream” is quoted from a story by Zhuangzi, in which he relates a dream about living freely away from the troubles o f human society. At a fundamental level, the ephemeral nature of living creatures and plants, including us human beings, is what connects this multilayered installation. Featuring various rooms that begin at a “Consultation Room for Foreign Residents” sign that was left on-site, this work will bring viewers to question the forced movement of immigrants, women’s issues, our whereabouts and affiliations in modern society, and the notion of countries as territories.
