NHK "GOOD NIGHT JAPAN" "OHIRUNE", Saitama Triennale 2020 / Photo: MARUO Ryuichi

“GOOD NIGHT JAPAN” is a television program that is broadcast on NHK. The work “OHIRUNE” is a pioneering installation that recreates the feel and atmosphere of the program, and invites visitors to embrace an exquisite sleeping experience.
“GOOD NIGHT JAPAN” is an endless talk program that listens to and responds to the voices of sleepless individuals throughout Japan. The program takes the unprecedented approach of not ending unless the real-time counter recording the number of ‘NEMUIINE (likes)’ = viewer’s level of sleepiness, reaches the designated target.
To promote a good night’s sleep not only for viewers but also for the visiting audience, the studio features a footbath and an extraordinarily huge fluffy bed. Visitors may bring their pajamas with them, and sleep together while watching the program live. On this occasion, this footbath and bed have arranged especially for Art Sightama.
In recent years, short sleeping breaks referred to as “power naps,” have been gaining much attention. Based on this latest sleep study, the work provides an ultimate space for sleep that has been conceived with attention to all details from the brightness and temperature of the room, to music, and even the angle at which to sleep. “OHIRUNE” serves to restore the tired minds and bodies of visitors who have walked around to
explore the various sites of the art festival.
