“Night” has been a symbol of death and fear in all parts of the world since ancient times, while at the same time being a source of imagination. The main reason for this perhaps,
is that in the world before civilization, the night was shrouded in a more profound darkness than it is now. It was in the depths of this absolute darkness that people had seemingly mirrored the ambiguities buried in the bottom of their hearts such as fear, nostalgia, and madness.
For this one-night only site-specific work, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra reinterprets “night” and “darkness” through the medium of classical music, creating an interactive project that aims to summon imagination and energy for living anew from the extraordinary world of fear, madness, and wild enthusiasm of the “night.” Radio Calisthenics, which normally marks the start of a new day, or in other words, the world
of life, body, and reason, takes on another form as an overture that invites visitors to venture into the darkness of the night.
